EDLD 5363 Web Conference December 15, 2011 Reflection

Tonight’s conference was a little shorter for me than the last. It may be because I was so distracted by the web cam not working. It was on, but it would not come up in the class. I understand it may be because of I need flash, but it has always worked before. Because I kept messing with flash and the camera, I am afraid I missed some of the discussion. I was even kicked out of the conference once and had to log back on and wait to get it in. I guess all these things are kinks in a technology that will be ironed out as time goes on, and there are always growing pains as there is progress.        The conference was kind of an overview of what should already be done and what to look forward to in the future.   I did not have any real questions, but enjoyed hearing Dr. Abernathy assure us that she was there to help us if we needed her. I believe this has been my favorite class so far. It has not been high stress and it is something I w...

EDLD 5356 Reflection on week 3-5 PSA Production

I found being part of a team to produce a public service announcement to be a very interesting experience. I believe that I have been in a team that is the most productive and motivated I have ever seen. Teri was clearly on her game from the beginning and got everything organized. Angela and Courtney were perfect for production and editing because they will not quit or be satisfied until everything is perfect. They were able to select the pictures for the video and keep them to a minimum so there could be adequate time to view them. I think Liz and I were a little blown away how competent these ladies are and the speed with which they attach a project.  Liz has been a real asset with her translations and narration in Spanish. I am very pleased we added the Spanish to reach such a large percentage of the public school parents. I could not have had a better team.  My frustration was with Google Doc. My computer and my computer at work would not run docum...

EDLD 5363 ET 8037 Week 2 Web Conference - November 22, 2011

Web Conference – November 22, 2011, Tuesday night Tonight’s web conference seemed to go off much smoother than conferences in the past. It may be that Dr. Abernathy was able to keep the number of attendees down to a smaller amount, allowing better connections.   Whatever the reason, the conference was enjoyable and informative – not frustrating. I was also able to hear Dr. Abernathy a large percent of the time, and only had her fade out a few time. I think because the holidays are so close, everyone was excited and wishing each other Happy Thanksgiving! One question I had, I believe was asked, was if we need to post our edited video. I believe the answer was, “no, it is only practice”.   I am a little confused because I think in week 5 we are supposed to have it posted in our WIKI. I will continue to try to get this question answered. I finally got the nerve to go to the web conference and use the webcam. I do not know why I hate cameras, but I do. Once I used it, it was libe...

EDLD 5363 Week 2 Evaluation of Video Editing Software

I looked at 10 of the best video editing software that was free to users.  They all had pros and cons.  Blender is a 3 D graphics video creation program. Wax features unlimited audio tracks in addition to video, and can be used as a stand-alone application, as well as a plug-in to other video editors. Avid FreeDV and Zwei-Stein is for someone that is more experienced as an editor than I am, and Avidemux appeared to be too simplistic (Scope, 2011).  Because my computer is fairly new, I already had Movie Maker installed. The phrase that won me over to Movie Maker was, “If you are a PC user, Movie Maker is the place to get started with your video editing” (Scope, 2011, #1 Microsoft movie maker section, para.1).  Special effects, titles, and editing videos, photos and audio can all be done by Movie Maker. You can import files with the following file name extensions into Windows Movie Maker to use in a project: ·         Video file...

EDLD 5363 Interview between Joanne Puryear and Thomas Holly

I was an interior design major before I changed to business. I have always loved old houses, and recently found out I lived in a house similar to the house I moved when I was a toddler. What did your family think of this project? They thought I was not operating on all cylinders. One daughter told me that you do not buy and old house like and antique and stick it in your backyard. Did you know what you were getting into? I had a friend that had moved two houses together, and I loved her house. I did not know the expense would be so much. Part of that was due to the fact Hurricane Ike came through and construction costs skyrocketed. Did you have any time where yo...

EDLD 5363- Week 1

Well, this class has started off with a bang, and I love it. I did not know I would like playing with storyboards and narration, but I do. I have learned so much just this week and am really looking forward to more. Today I helped a girl at work with her school. I showed her how to put illustrations into her papers with GoogleDoc. She thought I was a genius! I have enjoyed telling my story about my house. The hardest part was sqeezing it down to 2 minutes. I have hundreds of pictures and stories about that house. Each time I thought of something additional I would like to add, I had to cut somewhere. It is an eye opener what a big job all editors have. I thought the difficult part would be getting the raw footage, but in reality, that is the easy part. I have enjoyed this project so much, I believe I will go back and redo my video after this class to include more pictures and narration. I have always wanted to document my project, but have never done anything with it.    Know...

Action Plan finalized

This has been a week of reading other blogs and finalizing my action plan. I am encouraged to see that there are many classmates that have similar desires to find ways to encourage faculty to implement new technology. I have learned a lot by reading their plans and ideas. I learned about Survey Monkey and  I am happy to see suggestions for other surveys from one of our classmates. After looking at some suggestions, I have added a time for reflection into my plan, and I think I may add even more. I am looking forward to start working this plan.

EDLD 5301 - Week 3 Assignment - Action Planning Template

Action Planning Template Goal: The personal face-to face interaction that happens in traditional classrooms is absent in distance learning. How does this affect student learning, and how can Brazosport College create that connection between the student and teacher, and the student and student, in the on-line classroom to enhance student learning? The goal of this plan is to determine it value of adding collaborative elements in Brazosport College ’s distance course and help teachers incorporate more of these tools into their distance classes. Action Steps(s): Person(s) Responsible: Timeline: Start/End Needed Resources Evaluation 1.Research -1 Review current resources related to educational technology available to Brazosport College’s online instructors Joanne Puryear Dr. Dorothy Brandt Terry Comingore October- November 2011 IT – will share data available and training on WimBa and Campasia I will write a research paper listing resources and training available to Brazosport facult...

Week 3 - Action Research and how to do it!

My action research will take place at Brazosport College, the Bachelor of Applied Technology department. Although Brazosport is known as a 2 year college, it has recently added a bachelors program. Because this is a new program, it is small. There are three full time professors and several associates that contribute to the program. My focus will be on these teachers and their upper level classes. In the future, the scope could include the rest of the school. It has become very obvious that the students in this program gravitate to the on-line classes and are not as interested in the hybrid classes. In this bachelors program, there seem to be more digital immigrants than digital natives. Many of the students have started back to school later in life, hold part or full-time jobs, and balance family life and parenting. Because this is a relatively unique sample of students, the technology we will be introducing in the online classes may be just as new to the students as it is to the t...
