EDLD 5363 ET 8037 Week 2 Web Conference - November 22, 2011

Web Conference – November 22, 2011, Tuesday night

Tonight’s web conference seemed to go off much smoother than conferences in the past. It may be that Dr. Abernathy was able to keep the number of attendees down to a smaller amount, allowing better connections.  Whatever the reason, the conference was enjoyable and informative – not frustrating.
I was also able to hear Dr. Abernathy a large percent of the time, and only had her fade out a few time. I think because the holidays are so close, everyone was excited and wishing each other Happy Thanksgiving! One question I had, I believe was asked, was if we need to post our edited video. I believe the answer was, “no, it is only practice”.  I am a little confused because I think in week 5 we are supposed to have it posted in our WIKI. I will continue to try to get this question answered.
I finally got the nerve to go to the web conference and use the webcam. I do not know why I hate cameras, but I do. Once I used it, it was liberating, and I am no longer intimidated. I also enjoy seeing faces to go with names. I am beginning to recognize several of my classmates, and it makes the class more enjoyable.

Up in the air again!

The last time I posted, I was working at the Sheriff’s office and not teaching school.   Because I was not teaching, I made my Action Report at Brazosport College. Now, there have been some big changes in my work.   I am teaching graphic design, animation, digital interactive media, web technologies, advanced animation, and advanced graphic design at the high school. I took off working on my Lamar master program for six months so I could focus on the new job, and learn all the new Adobe software programs: Flash, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Dreamweaver.   Now that I am back, I am trying to work out how to continue working on my Action Research and Internship plan. I am not sure how to continue from here. It would be so much more useful to me to complete my Internship and Action Research at my new school, but I do not know if it would be better to just continue completing my work at Brazosport. These last five weeks I have not worked on either project. I have ha...

Action Research

When I first heard about action research, my mind immediately went back to what I believed traditional research meant. I thought I would be reading long articles on subjects that are of no interest to me, and reporting on what I read. Happily, that is not the meaning of action research. In her book, Nancy Dana Fichman likened the concept of action research to “wonderings” (Dana, 2009. p.2). I like the idea of it being a “wondering” or inquiry. The most creative minds I know, my children, have always had wonderings. They see things without preconceived opinions or theories. They take the information for face value and process it in a fresh, new way. That is how I envision action research. Action research is a process. It is a continual appraisal, implementation and evaluation cycle that repeats and refines. It allows and requires input from people that are directly involved with the topic of the inquiry, and that active engagement in the process increases the input of knowledg...
