Reflections on EDLS 5306 ET 8037

What outcomes had you envisioned for this course? Did you achieve those outcomes? Did the actual course outcomes align with those that you envisioned? When approaching the course, Concepts of Educational Technology, I was not clear what I would be required to do. My belief that technology was going to become a much more powerful tool in the future of education was what led me to this course, and that belief was more than confirmed in these last five weeks. I envisioned a class that would teach the current technologies that are applicable to classes that are online. I did not consider how much technology can and should be incorporated into the classroom. I also did not think I would meet anyone in this class that I could interact with and get to know. I was wrong about that, also. The class wiki and our individual wikis have been a powerful tool for communication with other classmates. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to meet them and hear their comments through their videos, blogs ...

Alvin Independent School District's Technology Plan

Although I am not teaching at Alvin Independent School District (AISD) in Alvin, Texas, I have chosen to report on their technology plan. The AISD’s technology plan is aligned with the 2010 National Education Technology Plan (NEPT) and uses the Texas STaR Chart as a tool for developing their long range technology plan.   Their goal for using telecommunications and information technology is summed up in their technology mission statement which states they want to “increase student achievement, improve data analysis and reporting, provide a home-school connection, and give teachers, students, administrators and parents the tools that can enable great things to happen in every school through the use of technology.” (Alvin). Another goal is to exceed International Society for Technology in Education standards. Their practical strategy is to continue to implement "The Writer" keyboarding,” Type to Learn”, NOVA 5000, additional Promethean Activboards in classrooms have more teache...

National Educational Technology Plan

I learned a long time ago, if you aim at nothing, that is what you will get. This idea can easily be applied to education. To insure that our students do not have to face a future of nothing, the U.S. Department of Education released the National Education Technology Plan ( NETP ). The Plan is designed to show how important information and communication technologies have become in the transforming of American education.   It is divided into five essential areas: learning, assessment, teaching, infrastructure, and productivity. The focus of this plan is on how people learn and how to teach them what they need to know in an emerging global economy. These young students already have computing, video imaging, social networking, gaming, and various multimedia skills in their personal and recreational lives. Education must meet these students at their level and help them integrate these skills into real tools for lifetime learning. The learning model of the plan is designed to encourage ...

Why Assessment?

Technology Assessments

Assessments are a method of evaluating. They can help the assessor gain insight which will, in turn, help with decisions that need to be made. An assessment is a common, accepted practice that could be classified as an old thing (Prensky, 2008). Who we are assessing is also an accepted idea. Teachers and students have been assessed by standardized testing, informal assessment, performances and results throughout their careers. What is new in this assessment is what we are assessing, technology skills.   I believe the same argument for the value in having assessments for students and teachers in core subjects applies to the argument that there is value in having assessments in technology skills.      In assessing technology it is first important to collect information. The Texas STaR Chart gives a variety of descriptions that help assess whether a teacher is using teacher- centered instruction or student-centered learning. There is also t...
